Creating a Team and Channel in Microsoft Teams
Creating a New Team
- Open Microsoft Teams and go to the Chat or Teams section.
- Click the ellipsis menu (⋯) in the top-right corner of the left-hand panel.
- From the dropdown menu, select New team.
- Choose to:
- Create a team from scratch, or
- Create from an existing group or team
- Enter the following information:
- Team name (e.g., "Marketing Team")
- Description (optional)
- Privacy level:
- Private – Only team owners can add members.
- Public – Anyone in your organization can join.
- Click Create, then add members to your team (optional).
Adding a Channel to a Team
Channels help divide a team’s work into topics or projects.
- Go to the Team where you want to add a channel.
- Click the ellipsis (⋯) next to the team name.
- Select Add channel.
- Fill in the details:
- Channel name
- Description (optional)
- Privacy:
- Standard – Accessible to everyone on the team.
- Private – Accessible only to a subset of team members.
- Shared – Allows external collaboration if enabled.
- Click Create.
Tips
- Use channels to organize work by topic (e.g., General, Projects, Meetings).
- Each channel has its own Posts, Files, and Apps tabs.
- Private channels have their own separate SharePoint site and permissions.
