Creating a Team and Channel in Microsoft Teams


Creating a New Team

  1. Open Microsoft Teams and go to the Chat or Teams section.
  2. Click the ellipsis menu (⋯) in the top-right corner of the left-hand panel.
  3. From the dropdown menu, select New team.

  1. Choose to:
  • Create a team from scratch, or
  • Create from an existing group or team
  1. Enter the following information:
  • Team name (e.g., "Marketing Team")
  • Description (optional)
  • Privacy level:
    • Private – Only team owners can add members.
    • Public – Anyone in your organization can join.
  1. Click Create, then add members to your team (optional).

Adding a Channel to a Team

Channels help divide a team’s work into topics or projects.

  1. Go to the Team where you want to add a channel.
  2. Click the ellipsis (⋯) next to the team name.
  3. Select Add channel.

  1. Fill in the details:
  • Channel name
  • Description (optional)
  • Privacy:
    • Standard – Accessible to everyone on the team.
    • Private – Accessible only to a subset of team members.
    • Shared – Allows external collaboration if enabled.
  1. Click Create.

Tips

  • Use channels to organize work by topic (e.g., General, Projects, Meetings).
  • Each channel has its own Posts, Files, and Apps tabs.
  • Private channels have their own separate SharePoint site and permissions.
