How to Mute Notifications for a Channel in Microsoft Teams
If you're part of a busy team, you may want to reduce distractions by muting notifications for specific channels. Muting a channel will stop message alerts while still allowing you to view the content at any time.
What Happens When You Mute a Channel
- You will not receive banner notifications or activity feed updates when new posts appear.
- You can still view messages by opening the channel manually.
- You can unmute the channel at any time.
Steps to Mute a Channel
Step 1: Open Microsoft Teams
Open the Teams desktop app or go to https://teams.microsoft.com in your web browser.
Step 2: Locate the Channel
- Click on Teams in the left-hand navigation bar.
- Navigate to the Team and find the specific Channel you want to mute.
Step 3: Open Channel Options
- Hover over the channel name.
- Click the ellipsis (...) to open the context menu.
Step 4: Select “Channel notifications”
From the menu, choose Channel notifications to open notification settings for this channel.
Step 5: Change the Notification Settings
In the pop-up window, choose:
- All activity – You’ll be notified of all messages.
- Mentions & replies – You’ll only be notified when someone @mentions you or replies to your messages.
Off – This will mute all notifications for the channel.
Select Off to mute the channel completely.
Click Save to apply the changes.
Optional: Hide the Channel
If you also want to reduce visual clutter, you can hide the channel:
- Right-click the channel name (or click the ellipsis
...
). - Select Hide.
This hides the channel from your main view, but you can still access it by clicking “Hidden channels” under the team.
How to Unmute a Channel
- Go to the channel again.
- Click the ellipsis
...
. - Choose Channel notifications and select the notification level you prefer.
Notes
- Muting a channel does not affect other members — it only applies to your personal view.
- You can still @mention someone in a muted channel, and they will be notified if their settings allow it.
